Bow Valley Parkway
Highway 1A

A Scenic Journey Through the Heart of Banff National Park

The Bow Valley Parkway is more than just a road—it’s one of the most scenic and wildlife-rich drives in the Canadian Rockies. Winding between Banff and Lake Louise, this historic route offers a slower, more intimate alternative to the Trans-Canada Highway and gives travelers a chance to experience the natural beauty of Banff National Park at a gentler pace. At the halfway point, you’ll find Johnston Canyon Lodge & Bungalows, perfectly located for exploring everything the Parkway has to offer.

A Road Built for the Journey

The Bow Valley Parkway stretches 48 kilometers (30 miles) and was originally built in the 1920s as a tourism-focused route through the mountains. Today, it’s known for its quiet charm, abundant wildlife sightings, and access to some of the region’s most beloved hikes and viewpoints. With lower speed limits, no commercial traffic, and regular pullouts for photo ops, it’s a route best enjoyed slowly—by car, bike, or even e-bike (rentals available from the lodge).

Things to See Along the Parkway

Johnston Canyon

One of the most iconic trails in Banff National Park. Hike along catwalks above the rushing creek to reach the Lower and Upper Falls. Trailhead access is directly from the lodge.

Castle Mountain Lookout

Panoramic views of the Bow Valley and surrounding peaks. A moderate 7.4 km round-trip hike that rewards you with spectacular scenery.

Morant’s Curve

A classic photo spot just past Lake Louise where trains wind through a dramatic bend in the Bow River against a mountain backdrop.

Baker Creek, Castle Junction & Other Pullouts

Ideal for a picnic, scenic photos, or peaceful nature breaks away from the crowds.

Wildlife Watching

The Parkway is home to an incredible range of wildlife. It’s not uncommon to see elk, deer, black bears, bighorn sheep, and even grizzly bears from the roadside—especially in the early morning or evening.

Please remember:

Seasonal Access Closures

From May 1 to June 25, Parks Canada closes a section of the Parkway to vehicle traffic between the Fireside Day Use Area and Johnston Canyon to create a peaceful corridor for cyclists and wildlife. During this time, vehicle access to Johnston Canyon Lodge is available via Castle Junction only. We recommend checking Parks Canada trail conditions and road updates before you travel, especially in spring and fall.
