Johnston Canyon Lodge & Bungalows has been welcoming adventurers, hikers, and nature lovers to the heart of Banff National Park for nearly a century. Established in 1926, the lodge was built to offer travelers a place to rest and recharge after exploring the dramatic canyon trail—already a popular destination at the time.
Back then, guests arrived by horse-drawn carriage or early automobiles, and the Bow Valley Parkway (then called Banff-Windermere Highway) was one of the few scenic routes through the Rockies. Johnston Canyon quickly became known as a hidden gem: close enough to Banff for day trips, but far enough to escape the crowds and immerse yourself in nature.
Over the decades, the lodge has remained family owned and operated, with a commitment to preserving the natural charm and warm hospitality that first drew guests here. Many of our original bungalows still stand, carefully maintained and updated to reflect modern comfort while retaining their rustic mountain character.
What makes Johnston Canyon special is more than just its history—it’s the land itself. Carved by thousands of years of rushing water, the canyon’s towering limestone cliffs, turquoise pools, and cascading waterfalls are a testament to nature’s raw beauty and power. The trail that winds through the canyon—now equipped with catwalks and viewpoints—has been a must-do experience for generations of visitors.
The Black Swift, a rare migratory bird, nests exclusively in the canyon’s cliff walls, adding to the area’s ecological importance. In their honour, we named our on-site restaurant the BlackSwift Bistro, blending the spirit of the canyon with locally inspired cuisine.
Today, Johnston Canyon Lodge & Bungalows offers 42 heritage cabins and bungalows, an ice cream shack, café, bistro, and a full fleet of E-bikes for exploring the Bow Valley Parkway. While the lodge has grown and evolved, its heart remains the same: a place to experience the Rockies as they were meant to be—unplugged, unhurried, and unforgettable.
Many of our guests return year after year, passing on the tradition to their children and grandchildren. Whether you’re here for the first time or coming back for your 20th visit, we’re honoured to be part of your story.
