Johnston Canyon isn’t just home to breathtaking waterfalls and scenic trails—it’s also part of a thriving ecosystem within Banff National Park. From small woodland creatures to rare birds and even the occasional bear sighting, wildlife is all around you here. Whether you’re walking the trail or relaxing at your cabin, you’re never far from the rhythms of the natural world.
Our namesake bird and one of the rarest in North America. These small, fast-moving birds nest in the cliff walls near the Upper Falls, typically arriving each spring from South America.
2.5 km one way (about 2 hours round-trip)
Easily spotted darting through underbrush or scurrying near the lodge. They’re curious and cute—but remember, never feed wildlife.
5.8 km one way (about 4 hours round-trip)
Common along the Bow Valley Parkway, especially in early morning or evening. These graceful animals are best admired from a distance.
While bear sightings on the Johnston Canyon trail are extremely rare due to high foot traffic, they do live in the surrounding areas. Always stay alert, especially during quieter times or in shoulder seasons.
Sometimes seen crossing the Parkway or slinking along the tree line at dusk or dawn.
Look up—you might spot hawks, owls, gray jays, or Clark’s nutcrackers. Bring binoculars for a better view!
