Few places in the Canadian Rockies capture the imagination quite like Johnston Canyon. There is a reason why this stunning landscape is one of the most visited places in Banff National Park.

A true all-season landmark of the Bow Valley, as the snow melts and the frozen waterfalls slowly thaw, Johnston Canyon comes alive in the warmer seasons. When the temperature starts to creep up, both locals and visitors alike begin the task of planning road trips and weekend escapes. While both spring and summer offer incredible experiences, each season brings its own atmosphere, advantages, and considerations. Whether you are hoping to avoid crowds, enjoy quieter trails, or experience the canyon at its liveliest, choosing the right season can shape your entire visit.

So, which is truly the best time to visit Johnston Canyon? Is it the Spring or the Summer?

Visiting Johnston Canyon in the Spring

Spring at Johnston Canyon feels fresh, wild, and peaceful. As the snow begins to melt in the mountains, the waterfalls grow stronger and louder, creating some of the most dramatic water flow of the year.

As the last of winter fades away and trails reappear, the stunning wildlife of the valley emerge from their winter hiding. Seasonal road closures allow for more space to bike and hike, and give the local animals (think: elk, deer, wolf, bears!) more safe space to roam freely. The cooler days make it easier for hiking in the area, whether it be the canyon itself or any of the surrounding local hikes.

One of the biggest advantages of visiting in spring is the quieter atmosphere. Early season visitors often enjoy more space on the catwalks and viewing platforms, allowing for a slower and more relaxed experience. There is less traffic on the roads and fewer people lining up.

Pros of Visiting in Spring:

  • Stronger waterfalls from snowmelt
  • Cooler temperatures for hiking
  • Fewer crowds and quieter trails
  • Better opportunities for wildlife viewing
  • Scenic cycling and hiking opportunities during seasonal 1A closures

Spring also brings a unique opportunity to bike or hike the Bow Valley Parkway when portions of Highway 1A (also known as the Bow Valley Parkway) close to vehicles. This seasonal closure creates a peaceful and scenic route between Banff and Johnston Canyon, making the journey itself part of the adventure.

Things to Consider in Spring

Spring weather in the Rockies can still feel unpredictable. Snowfall is possible into May, and icy sections may remain on shaded parts of the trail. Visitors should come prepared with proper footwear, extra layers, and crampons for changing conditions.

Facilities, lodging, and recreation areas may still be closed or operating on a reduced schedule throughout the spring. Keep this in mind when planning an itinerary, and do thorough research before visiting!

The catwalks above the canyon are less crowded in the spring.

Visiting Johnston Canyon in the Summer

Summer is the most popular time to visit Johnston Canyon, and for good reason. The sun peaks through the towering trees, lighting up the waterfalls shooting mist into the warm air. Summer temps, long daylight hours, and fully accessible trails make it an easy addition to any Banff itinerary.

The canyon feels lively during summer months, with visitors from around the world exploring the waterfalls, hiking to the Ink Pots, and enjoying nearby picnic areas and viewpoints. Wave ‘hello’ to your fellow hikers on the trail, or stop for an ice cold beverage at the Bistro.

For families and first time visitors, summer offers the most predictable trail conditions and easiest accessibility.

Pros of Visiting in Summer

  • Warm and comfortable weather
  • Fully accessible hiking trails
  • Longer daylight hours
  • Ideal conditions for families and casual hikers
  • Easy access to nearby attractions in Banff and Lake Louise

The extended daylight also allows visitors to experience Johnston Canyon early in the morning or later in the evening, which can help avoid the busiest hours.

Things to Consider in Summer

Banff National Park is one of the busiest summer destinations across the country, and Johnston Canyon is not exempt from this! The summer season brings the largest crowds. Parking lots often fill early, especially between late morning and mid afternoon. The narrow catwalks and viewpoints can become congested during peak hours, particularly in July and August. There are fewer opportunities for photography or a quiet picnic.

Visitors looking for a quieter experience should plan to arrive early in the morning or later in the evening when the trail is less busy.

As the temperatures rise, biking and hiking are more accessible in the summer.

Crowds and Timing

If avoiding crowds is your priority, spring is often the better choice. The canyon feels calmer, parking is easier, and the overall pace is more relaxed. Visitors looking to enjoy the peaceful surroundings, practice photography, or bike the 1A would most likely enjoy Johnston Canyon in the spring.

Summer delivers a more energetic atmosphere, but it requires more planning. Midweek visits are typically less crowded than weekends, and sunrise hikes can offer a much more peaceful experience. Visitors looking to meet other hikers, are happy sharing the trails, and enjoy the added activities that summer brings would most likely enjoy Johnston Canyon in the summer.

Reminder: No matter the season, Johnston Canyon remains one of the busiest attractions in Banff National Park, so planning ahead always helps.

Booking Hotels Near Johnston Canyon

Accommodation timing can make a major difference when visiting the area.

Spring generally offers more flexibility, with lower demand and slightly better pricing before peak season arrives. As hotels and lodges re-open after the winter, they are less likely to be at full occupancy, and are more likely to offer better packages and deals.

During summer, hotels in Banff and Lake Louise often book months in advance, especially for weekends and holidays. Visitors planning a summer trip should secure accommodations as early as possible to access the best availability and rates.

Having a sunrise coffee before a beautiful day of activities? Yes please! Staying near Johnston Canyon allows visitors to experience the trail outside peak daytime hours, and to access the nearby activities a little easier. Early mornings and evenings often provide the most peaceful moments in the canyon.
